The Los Barrios Mural

A Tribute to Viola Barrios, Family and the San Antonio Community

Created by San Antonio artist Ana Hernández

A Legacy in Living Color

Unveiled in 2024 to celebrate Los Barrios’ 45th anniversary, this 9-by-15-foot mural honors the remarkable life and lasting legacy of founder Viola Barrios. The piece was created not only to commemorate an important milestone, but also to thank the San Antonio community that has supported the Barrios family since Viola opened the original restaurant in 1979.

Inspired by the tradition of a Mexican ofrenda, the mural presents Viola’s life as a colorful timeline of family, food and faith. At its center, she holds a bowl of her beloved carne guisada. Around her are personal memories and meaningful milestones, including images of Viola as a young woman in Bustamante, Mexico, early Los Barrios signage, family portraits and dishes connected to treasured Barrios family celebrations.

A flowing red ribbon brings the composition together with three words that embody the values Viola carried throughout her life: amor, fe and alegría. Her belief in love, faith and happiness continues to shape the way the Barrios family welcomes guests, serves its community and carries her legacy forward.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
The mural was created by San Antonio artist Ana Hernández-Burwell, whose work explores femininity, popular culture and the regional imagery of South Texas and Mexico. Born and raised along the South Texas border, Hernández-Burwell draws inspiration from her experiences as a first-generation American, a mother and a contemporary Latina artist.

She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting with a minor in art history from the University of Texas at San Antonio. Her work has been exhibited regionally and internationally, and she has contributed to public art projects in both San Antonio and Tamaulipas, Mexico.

Through her vibrant colors, layered symbolism and thoughtful portraiture, Hernández-Burwell transformed the Barrios family’s memories into a visual celebration of the woman whose love of family and food started it all.

Amor. Fe. Alegría.
